Memories of Childhood and Lessons I Learned about Time
Memories of childhood time together as a family bring the biggest smiles to my face. Goofing around with my siblings and parents, riding bikes through the neighborhood, baking in the kitchen and enjoying the visits with grandparents fill my mind.
Somehow my mother cooked breakfast and dinner every day, kept the house and us clean and made it all seem easy. We only had one car and my mother’s job was to take care of the kids and house.
Growing up in a small town, days wandered their way through weeks and months leaving time for walks to the local grocery store down the street for ice cream treats after dinner and for reading on the front porch swing. Freshly baked cakes, chewy cookies and loaves of cinnamon bread were staples in my house.
I didn’t realize you could get a box cake mix until I was in high school. Because my mother cooked all the time I just figured that’s what everyone did. Mac and cheese in a box? Spaghetti sauce in a jar? Brownie Mix? Would you believe it if I told you my mother could only make toast when she got married? She was a quick learner and taught me my way around the kitchen years later.
Life has picked up quite a bit since then with my own children to raise and while I still value homemade foods, I have been know to grab a box of brownie mix in desperation for a last minute end of season soccer party. The Scone Shop started in my kitchen showing my oldest how to mix up ingredients to create homemade magic. I had no idea it would turn into a way to share the love I have for time spent as a family together in the kitchen and around the table into a business.
That’s what I love about my business. It frees up time and space for friends and loved ones to gather together and share delicious food. It creates opportunities for conversations. It does not keep you stuck alone preparing something in the kitchen. It does not require multiple steps to finish. It is not full of preservatives. It nourishes us physically and emotionally. It is a simple way to find extra moments in our busy days while still feeding those we love well.
Can we do it all? Maybe, but do we really have to? The Scone Shop wants to partner with cooks to share in the creation of scrumptious meals for those we love. Let us help you in your quest. Let us give you the gift of time.
